Keeping an Eye on Growing Smiles
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends kiddos have their first orthodontic evaluation at age seven. Most of the time, Dr. Kothari will simply keep an eye on your child’s growth and development and let you know when the time is right to start orthodontic treatment down the road. If early interceptive treatment or something like a habit-breaking appliance is indicated, we always take a conservative approach and help you make an informed decision about your child’s care. Why Age Seven?
- Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.
- We can offer guidance if your child has harmful oral habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. We also offer habit-breaking appliances if necessary.
- A check-up is the only way to reveal if your child’s bite is fine, if there’s a developing problem that can just be monitored, or if early interceptive treatment is the best approach.
- Early treatment may prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. In some cases, Dr. Kothari will be able to achieve results that wouldn’t be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
